[This is a comment I find myself needing to copy and paste often when discussions of Latter-day Saint doctrine comes up on X. I’m just putting it here so I can find it easily.]
One of the great tells of anti-Mormon X is “Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are brothers!!1!”
What we believe is that ALL are children of the Father. You, me, Jesus, Satan, Hitler, Mother Theresa, long-forgotten people who died in places where the name of Jesus was never spoken. He’s the Father of us all.
Now, creedal Christians may well disagree with that, and contend that “Jesus isn’t a created being, He’s co-eternal with God.” That’s definitely a meaty disagreement. It’s a CENTRAL disagreement. It’s the actual doctrinal disagreement behind “Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are brothers!”
But those who list “Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are brothers!” as a Latter-day Saint heresy aren’t interested in focusing on the core doctrinal disagreement. They don’t want clarity. They want a bumper-sticker to shut down the discussion.
They either just want to make Mormons sound as weird and offensive as they can. they want to imply that Mormons believe that God had two (and only two) sons, Jesus and Satan, as if Latter-day Saints are really Zoroastrians; or they just read it on a list of “Weird Things Mormons Believe” and repeat it without examining it.
Either way, they are interested in fomenting prejudice and “winning” for Their Side, not in discussing truth. They are not, by any definition, people of good conscience.
