HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES Rewatch: Season 1, Part V

(I’ve decided to call this a “rewatch” rather than a “bingewatch” — it’s not really a binge when you’re only watching one or two episodes a week.)

1:10 Revenge is Sweet – Rebecca, a beautiful mortal woman (Vanity, Prince’s one-time squeeze — if we can’t cast rock stars, we’ll cast the rock-star-adjacent!), stalks Duncan with revenge in mind; she believes he killed her fiance Reinhardt (Christoph Ohrt), not knowing that said fiance was Immortal and hence not dead.  Duncan and Tessa spend most of the episode wondering whether Rebecca is doing this on her own or is working with Reinhardt, or is somehow just a catspaw. Meanwhile, Richie sells used cars. No, really. This is the second (and last) appearance of Angie, the cute girl from “The Road Not Taken” that Richie knew back in the day.

This episode made me realize that Adrian Paul’s greatest acting challenge was making his guest star opponents not look as incompetent as they were with swords. Vanity could not handle a sword. No, she could not.

Bonus points for using “Who Wants to Live Forever” in the last scene, although it doesn’t really fit.

1:11 See No Evil – A friend of Duncan and Tessa is attacked (but driven off) by a serial killer called “the Scalper,” whose pattern of scalping and killing beautiful blonde women is identical to that of a crazed thespian Immortal that Duncan dispatched back in the 1920s.  Using his knowledge of the Immortal’s pattern and personality, he feeds clues to Nosy Reporter Girl to feed them to the police to track and catch the theatre-obsessed copycat. Of course, the police screw up, and it’s up to Duncan to trap him.

This is an odd episode. It feels like it started out in the writers room as a “random danger situations” episode, until someone said, “No, we really need to put an Immortal in it.” But the Immortal’s only there in the flashback.

Also: In the flashback, they tried tying Adrian Paul’s hair back and keeping it out of sight beneath the collar of his double-breasted suit. It didn’t work.
