I’m pretty sure they would not. As Heinrich Himmler so disturbingly said of the Holocaust (of which he spoke much more frankly and far less euphemistically than any of the other Nazis), “This is a never written and never to be written page of glory in our history.”

Oh, yes, definitely, that’s part of it. The whole laziness problem–if you can foist your children’s civilization and education off on someone else–the teacher or the TV, for that matter–why not?

And so now we see those chickens coming home to roost, to coin a phrase. They get their “news’ from something like TikTok (I thought it was bad when it was Facebook!!!) and that’s what they consider facts.

We see it everywhere–we see a definite heavy trend toward “the end justifies the means,” no matter what rights, what laws, etc. are broken, derided and ignored. It’s pretty effing horrifying.

Sigh.

The problem is at least a generation back. Parents’ number one job is to civilize the next generation of barbarians; what we’re seeing is evidence of a failure decades old.

I’m all for freedom of speech. I **mean** it. I support the right of any American to be as much of a jackass or asshole as s/he wants and to espouse that aloud. That’s the privilege of being a citizen here. You can think, believe and yes, even spew, whatever stupidity, vileness or idiocy you wish. I support it, and would die on that hill. It doesn’t mean that what’s being said doesn’t horrify me, though. What’s disturbing is the utter lack of education that is being demonstrated by our own younger college students and, worse, their professors and everybody else who seems to think that this is all some game.

I don’t know. It’s pretty bad. I remember a time when we would have thought that nobody in their right mind would expose themselves as being this vile or depraved and now they seem to take joy in it. I just…don’t know.
