[I posted this on Facebook yesterday, where it got a surprising amount of traction. I figured I’d better put it here if I ever want to find it again.]
Dear Senator Feinstein, Senator Booker and sundry others:
Congratulations! I have been a largely independent voter for decades now (occasionally registered with one party or the other so I could participate in a specific primary of interest); I have tried to keep to a practice of voting for the candidate, not the party, and trying to judge which candidate was the actual better person. As you can imagine, the 2016 Presidential contest was hard for me, as neither major candidate came close to my “good person” threshold; I eventually ended up casting my vote for Evan McMullin, as at least I didn’t know of any bad thing about him at the time.
Your performance over the past few months, and especially during the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, has convinced me to change my voting philosophy. When I realized the depths to which you were all willing to sink to maintain and grab power — including using vile and unsubstantiated accusations against a jurist whom you hated BECAUSE he was a qualified and consistent judge who didn’t let policy concerns or preferential outcomes influence his reasoned interpretation of law, lobbed at the eleventh hour as a desperate effort to run out the clock — I decided that, truly, determining my vote by party was the solution.

Not only will I never vote for a Democrat again, I will choose my preferred candidate by gauging who has the best odds of blocking a Democrat from gaining elected office.
In other words, though by my then-current standards I could not bring myself to vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 election, I will have no qualms about casting my vote in 2020 for whoever can best keep a Democrat from gaining the Presidency. The same goes for federal Senate and House seats, as well as state gubernatorial and legislative office. Anyone who chooses to publicly declare a commonality of interest with you by advertising a common party affiliation is an enabler of those who would destroy the rule of law, the presumption of innocence, and just about every denominator of public decency and civilized behavior.
So yes, congratulations on exceeding my expectations. Even Harry Reid, as vile a power-hungry operator as I ever hoped to witness during my life, could not drive me into the camp of your opponents the way you have.
I understand that that may not have been your intention. However, along with your “control at any cost” ethic, you Democrats seem just as devoted to the law of unintended consequences. So here’s your consequence.
Sincerely,
Nathan Shumate
That encapsulates my feelings recently quite nicely. Why would I ever consider giving my vote to a party that seems to be dead set on eliminating due process? As a man, how could I give support to a party that would condone the destruction of my career and reputation based on evidence free accusations? I hope there’s a significant course correction, but I’m not holding my breath.
