Yes, but anyone who needs more explosions because they can't follow all those words are going to be put off by the talky, introspective first half (beginning right after Krypton self-destructs). And really, isn't there some other option between "soliloquiy party" and "GO MORE BOOM"?

Well, with these type of blockbuster films studios are going for the global market and the fewer elements that are language based the better thus less dialogue and more explosions.

Maybe I'm getting more critical, but I've noticed a big trend in movies to leave anything of substance behind in favor of more explosions. I haven't seen most of the superhero movies, except the Avengers ones because my sons insisted I watch them, so I can't really judge them. But I'd rather see a low-budget movie with great storytelling and characters and hokey costuming and effects than watch two hours of fancy special effects and cool poses. It really hurts when the movie had a lot of potential and fell far short due to some stupid story decisions.

You know I thoroughly enjoy brainless entertainment, Sharktopus is one of my favorite movies, but I'm not completely shallow all of the time. I'll take a pass on the new Superman and watch Croczilla instead. It's got some great characters and fun plot twists.

I don't think it's monolithic "Hollywood" so much; producer Christopher Nolan obviously knows what he's doing (even though I think that bringing the "Batman Begins" method to Superman was a mistake), director Zack Snyder certainly loves pop culture (although he just can't tell if what he's making is good or not), and screenwriter Daid Goyer has a track record of having fun with what he writes (seeing his name in the credits always tickles me, since he started out churning direct-to-video crap for Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment). I think it was a combination of 1) people who've worked together so much they just fell into their normal groove without adequate judgment, and 2) a studio that kept saying, "This is a major tentpole movie! Turn it up to 11! Then turn it up again!"

I think Hollywood has forgotten how to tell good stories because really, when push comes to shove in movies, it isn't the explosions or the FX, it's the story that makes the movie good.
